1.2842 AISI 02 is a quality non-distorting cold working tool steel. It is characterised by giving high surface hardness after tempering. 1.2842 offers good dimensional stability in hardening and good machinability. Conforms to Werkstoff Number 1.2842 and DIN specification 90MnCrV8

Cold work tool steel with high dimensional stability at heat treatment. Very high resistance to cracking. High machinability, medium thoughness and resistance to wear. Applications on measuring tools, machine knives for the wood, paper and metal industry, cold cutting shear blades, thread cutting tools.

Forging: Heat 1.2842 slowly and uniformly to 1000°C. Forge within a range of 1050/850°C reheating if necessary. Cool slowly (preferably in a furnace) to avoid setting up stresses.

Annealing: Heat uniformly to 720°C, equalise, then furnace cool. (Hardness about 229 Brinell). Fully machined tools in grade 1.2842 should be packed during annealing.

Hardening: Heat the 1.2842 uniformly to 790/820°C until heated through. (If possible pre-heat at 300/500°C). Allow 30 minutes per 25 millimetre of ruling section and quench immediately in oil.

Martempering: Martempering of 1.2842 is an alternative hardening procedure which may be used when suitable salt bath equipment is available.

Tempering: Heat the 1.2842 uniformly and thoroughly at the selected tempering temperature and hold for at least one hour per inch of total thickness.

Soft Annealing
Heat to 690-720oC, cool slowly in furnace. This will produce a maximum Brinell hardness of 229.

Stress Relieving
Stress relieving to remove machining stresses should be carried out by heating to 650oC, holding for one hour at heat, followed by air cooling. This operation is performed to reduce distortion during heat treatment.
