Alloy 317L UNS S31703 is a molybdenum-bearing low carbon content "L" grade austenitic stainless steel with greatly increased resistance to chemical attack as compared to the conventional chromium-nickel austenitic stainless steel pipe such as Alloy 304 and 316L. In addition, Alloy 317L offers higher creep, stress-to-rupture, and tensile strength at elevated temperature than conventional stainless steel tubing. It is a low carbon or "L" grade which provides resistance to sensitization during welding and other thermal processes.

317L is a low carbon version of 317 stainless steel. It possesses the same high strength and corrosion resistance and will produce stronger welds due to its low carbon content. 317L is similar to 316 stainless steel but provides improved resistance to atmospheric corrosion, to many organic and inorganic chemical and to food and beverages. 317L's molybdenum content increases to 3 to 4% from the 2 to 3% found in 316 and 316L. Many users are shifting over to this alloy in lieu of 304 and 316 as availability and cost improves.

Molybdenum-bearing austenitic stainless steel which are more resistant to general corrosion and pitting/crevice corrosion than the conventional chromium-nickel austenitic steel. 317L is non-magnetic in the annealed condition but may become slightly magnetic as a result of welding.
