AISI 1008 is a Standard grade Carbon Steel. It is composed of (in weight percentage) 0.10%(max) Carbon (C), 0.30-0.50% Manganese (Mn), 0.04%(max) Phosphorus (P), 0.05%(max) Sulfur (S), and the base metal Iron (Fe). Other designations of AISI 1008 carbon steel include UNS G10080 and AISI 1008.
This alloy is generally used for "commercial quality" cold rolled steel sheet. It is known for its very good formability and comparatively high strength. It has a very good surface finish that is far superior to hot rolled A36. 1008 Steel is an economical, general purpose steel grade offering moderate strength and toughness. As a standard grade, 1008 steel is used in many common, low-stress applications.
The term steel refers to iron in which 0.02 to 1.7% carbon has been added. There are many different types of steel and various alloys and applications for each type. Generally steel is low cost and it is easy to finish with paint or other coatings. This makes steel a popular choice for many different types of products. It is used commonly in the manufacturing of automobiles, homes, cutlery, appliances and magnetic cores just to name a few. Steel does however, have poor corrosion resistance.
