Corrosion

Acetic acid is an organic acid and a common ingredient for the manufacturing of a wide range of chemicals and products. The chemical formula for acetic acid is CH3COOH, and it is also known as ethanoic acid. Acetic acid is a colorless liquid with a pungent, vinegar-like odor. In water-free conditions acetic acid is named Glacial Acetic Acid. Corrosive nature of glacial acetic acid at temperature higher than 120°C

At temperatures greater than 120C acetic acids become extremely corrosive and specialty materials are needed to contain it. Typically zirconium has been the material of choice since its corrosion resistance to glacial acetic acid is good.  While zirconium offers good corrosion resistance to acetic acid, corrosion resistance to acetic acid is superb at a cost that is at least 30% less expensive than zirconium.

Testing in Glacial Acetic Acid

The test solution was prepared using a reagent grade Glacial Acetic Acid. Three test vessels. consisting of new PTFE lined pressure vessels were used. Approximately 65 ml of test solution was poured into each PTFE vessel. One test specimen was placed in each of the three test vessels.

All of the test specimens were completely immersed in the Glacial Acetic Acid. The washer and the Ta specimen were suspended above the bottom of the PTFE vessels using PTFE string attached to a PTFE bracket. The test vessels were then sealed. The assembled test vessels were placed in a laboratory oven at 205°C for a period of six (6) weeks (1008 hours)
